Oct. 4 Market Street Mile

William Andrews was Hood’s top finisher with a time of 29:04 at Saturday’s Don Cathcart Invitational where the Blazers placed 11th of 13 teams. Completing the race behind Andrews were Nick Manning (above) (29:32) and Brendan Greenlees (29:33), while Mattia Mabellini (30:15), Brian Cathcart (35:00) and Rod Hendrickson (35:33) all set personal bests. Hood will compete in the Market Street Mile on Sat., Oct. 4.

Danielle Sgro set a new senior school record, clocking in at 23:54 to finish 24th at the Don Cathcart Invitational Saturday. Sgro lowered the previous record by 17 seconds and missed her own overall school record by 11 seconds. Following Sgro were Jessica Stanley (27:03), Maria Moss (above) (27:52), Sam Smith (29:55) and Kelly Keyser (30:20). The Blazers are scheduled to run in the Market Street Mile Saturday.

Sophomore Lacey Kelly (above) scored the first goal of her Blazer career Saturday in a 5-1 road loss to Sweet Briar College in nonconference action. Jen Lacy put forth a vailant effort in the cage, rejecting 21 shot attempts in defeat. The Blazers have three games on the docket this week, including a pair of Capital Athletic Conference matchups.

The Blazers were idle last week but travel to Grantham, Pa., for the Messiah College Invitational Wednesday.

The Hood College men’s soccer team opened its conference schedule this week with a pair of losses. Freshman Jacob Ausherman scored Hood’s lone goal in a 3-1 loss against the University of Mary Washington Wednesday. J.T. Smaldore (above) registered the assist, and Shawn Fernholz turned away six Eagle shots. Fernholz also made 11 saves in the Blazers’ 4-0 loss to Marymount University Saturday. Hood is back in action Saturday when it hosts CAC opponent Gallaudet University at 3 p.m.

The Blazers set a school record for most goals scored in a game in an 11-0 trouncing over Wilson College Thursday. The previous mark was 10, set against Gallaudet last season.  Junior Whitney Boyer (above) and sophomore Cara Jordan also tied individual records. Boyer netted four goals while Jordan had three assists. Rounding out the scoring for the Blazers were Nikky Antalffy, Katherine Rendon, Carlie Colella, Jessica Devine and Jessica Parrish, who had a hat trick. Antalffy and Alexa Hubicki were credited with two assists apiece. Hood went on to post its fourth-straight shutout with a 3-0 win over CAC foe Marymount Saturday. Boyer, Colella and Devine all scored for the Blazers, while Colella and Rachel Wolf each had an assist.

Women's Tennis (2-0, 0-0 CAC)

The Blazers edged Shenandoah, 5-4, on Monday in their second straight win of the fall season. Jillian Elkaim, Laura Saad (above) and Danielle Hunt won singles matches in straight sets. In doubles play, the teams of Christine Ocampos-Barry and Caitlin Erickson, and Hunt and Saad both won. Hood is back in action Friday at Goucher.

Oct. 1 vs. Salisbury University 7 p.m.

Hood snagged its first win of the 2008 season Saturday, with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-14) victory over Trinity (D.C.) in a home tri-meet. The Blazers served up 31 aces–the third-highest single match total in school history. Ashley Burns led Hood with eight kills and Kristina Straub had 15 assists to go along with 10 aces for her first double-double. In its second match of the triangular, Hood came up short against Goucher, 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-15). Burns finished with six kills, while Lena Bushrod (above) had 17 digs. Earlier in the week, the Blazers fell to Marymount, 3-0 (25-19, 25-8, 25-12), and Stevenson, 3-0 (25-4, 25-11, 25-9).
