Academic Advising and Course Registration Preparation

During Summer Orientation, you will meet with a faculty adviser—a Hood professor—to build your fall schedule of classes. Come prepared to talk about activities you enjoy, subjects that interest you or careers that sound right for you. This discussion will help you and your adviser narrow down your major area of interest and select your fall semester courses which include courses that fulfill the core requirements. Students typically take four to five courses their first semester.

At least two days before you attend Summer Orientation, complete the following tasks.

  1. Select at least four Core Courses that you are interested in taking your first semester. Select courses that look interesting to you from a number of different categories. You will need to complete a minimum of 42 hours of core credits to graduate. Hood’s Core curriculum provides a solid grounding in the liberal arts. Choose more courses than you expect to take in your first semester so you have options when you meet with your adviser to create your fall schedule.

  2. Select several suggested courses in your major area of interest. These courses are grouped by academic areas of interest. If you have not narrowed down a specific academic area of interest, explore majors on the website and select several more core course options that are of interest to you. If you are not ready to decide on one major area of interest, that’s ok! All new students at Hood enroll as undeclared majors. Choose several options so you have some flexibility when you meet with your adviser to create your fall schedule.

  3. Review and select your top two choices from the First -Year Seminar courses. First-Year Seminars are reading- and writing-intensive courses that will help you refine your skills in critical thinking, information literacy, class discussion, oral presentation and group work. While not required, the First-Year Seminar courses can replace some core course requirements.

  4. Complete the Academic Advising Survey. The information you provide on the survey and the courses you selected in 1, 2 and 3 above (which you will also include on the survey), will guide your conversations during your advising appointment. You and your adviser will use this information as a baseline from which to build your fall schedule.

Newsletters

Watch for a series of Orientation Newsletters that will arrive once a month beginning in May. These newsletters will contain important information about your transition to Hood.

Placement Testing

To ensure that you are placed in appropriate course levels or sections, first-year students are required to take placement tests in English composition, mathematics and a foreign language, or meet exemption requirements for each test. Placement tests may be taken beginning April 1, 2012, and must be completed by June 1, 2012.
