Program of study: Biomedical Science
Graduation year: 2010
Why did you choose to pursue a graduate degree?
I obtained my undergrad degree in 2003 and I immediately went to work at NIH as a research biologist. I was unsure about going back to get my doctorate or masters. I worked for about three years, eventually moving to MedImmune, a local biotech company. What I saw was that for people who want to stay in the lab, a master's degree is an excellent career boost.
Why did you choose Hood College Graduate School?
Having received my undergraduate degree from a small liberal arts college, I learned to love the more intimate learning environment. Hood offered a similar environment, not to mention a beautiful campus with intelligent and passionate professors. The best part of my experience at Hood was that the graduate programs are designed around working individuals. I was able to work full time while attending classes. I also loved that Hood offers a thesis track in addition to the comprehensive test.
How did your degree help you further your professional or personal life?
The immediate satisfaction was getting promoted at work! But what I love the most is not only how much I learned but also how I grew as a scientist while obtaining my degree. In preparing for and defending my thesis, I was able to apply what I learned in the classroom and gain valuable insights into writing, presenting and defending my data. I feel so much more confidant in everything I do now, be it giving presentations or even planning experiments.
Who is your favorite faculty member and why?
This is a hard one. I really liked them all but I will never forget Professor Hirschhorn and Professor Rossio. Both were on my thesis committee. Professor Hirschhorn is a tough teacher but an excellent one. She has valuable insight into biology and current scientific research. Professor Rossio taught my immunology and thesis classes. He is a fun an outgoing professor who has a way of teaching that really brings you into the information.
What would you share with prospective students about your graduate experience at Hood?
If you are thinking of furthering yourself and your education, do it at Hood! You simply cannot beat the quality of education and treatment you get at Hood—and it is here in Frederick! Plus the price for classes is more economical than any other grad school around. I know I got a great education here.
