Career Highlights  

After graduating from Virginia Tech with a pure math degree, I did not have a clue as to what career path I wanted to take.  I knew that I loved math but also did not want to teach due to the horror stories that had been shared with me. I took several retail management positions before I was urged to try teaching. After a year of unfulfilling work, I began teaching middle school math and self-contained science in Bay County, Florida Public Schools.   I LOVED IT! From working through personal issues with students and families to seeing the “ah ha” moment when a student figures out a problem, I was overjoyed with my career. I quickly became involved at the state level, serving as a member of the Range-finding and Standard Setting committees for the Florida State Department of Education assessment (FCAT). During this time, I also earned a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management. (My idea was to use this degree to recruit teachers for the district)

As I relocated to the Montgomery County area, I became a high school teacher, then a Math Content Specialist for the district. After training and supporting individual teachers and school teams, I chose to return to the school building as an assistant principal at the elementary level.  I completed my two-year assistant principal training then was selected to co-lead the opening of a new elementary school. After three years, I furthered my training to become a principal. I am entering my sixth year as a principal. I absolutely love the work that I do and the difference that my staff and I make in students’ lives.

Why is a doctoral program important to you?

The Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership offers a robust curriculum, where candidates from different career paths are brought together to study common themes that transcend across the private and public sector with the result of transforming communities for the greater good.  As an elementary school principal, this program provides a comprehensive course of study that will allow me to utilize my current knowledge and skills coupled with applied research to transform my community, district and society. The idea of continuing my journey of learning from others, learning together and applying these skills to impact society reignites my passion and compliments my life goal.

Career Highlights

After attending Virginia Union University and beginning a career in computer science, Joel quickly decided that the technology career path didn’t provide the intrinsic feeling of achievement he needed.  As a result, he joined the staff at Benjamin Stoddert Middle school in Prince George’s County. There he learned he possessed the talent to educate children and developed the desire to lead others in the field of education. In order to further his teaching experiences, he decided to turn to Fairfax County Public Schools and took employment at a Title 1 middle school.  He accredits Fairfax County Public Schools for developing his pedagogical talents and inspiring him toward his core belief that all students can achieve academic excellence.  After several years in Fairfax, he was approached with the opportunity to go into administration in Montgomery County. He accepted this new endeavor and has been in administration ever since.

Today serves as the principal of William H. Farquhar Middle School and believes that his varied experiences over the past 20 years as an educator provide value to the community he serves. He is focused on ensuring that his administrative team has a clear understanding of the organizational vision and the alignment of his core beliefs. He worked diligently to create high functioning teams, systems for observing, analyzing, and reflecting on instruction, and stressed the importance of continuous innovation. Though his school demographics have changed over the last five years, he has maintained high expectations for student grades and adolescent peer to peer behavior.  Outside of work, Joel enjoys watching his two boys play sports, traveling with family, golfing with friends, and learning new hobbies.

Why is a doctoral program important to you?

I feel strongly that my background has laid a valuable foundation for my goals. Growing up in a single parent household presented many challenges.  My family dealt with the issue of poverty, and I personally wrestled with identifying a positive role model.  As a result, I realized I had to set a goal for attaining a college education and be willing to face all adversity in order to succeed. This idea continually underscores my vision for educating our youth. We must create school structures that provide opportunities for all students and provide proactive strategies to prepare for emotional or cognitive student challenges.  Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to learn from dynamic leaders and gain insight on how to impact student learning with organizational improvement. I am looking forward to further enhancing my abilities through the Doctoral Program at Hood Dollege and strategically creating organizational practices that will improve educational school systems.

Director of Equity Initiatives, Montgomery County Public Schools, Maryland

Career Highlights

Troy Boddy has served in the role of the Director of Equity Initiatives for Montgomery County Public Schools, the nation’s 14th largest school district, for eight years.  In this role, he has been responsible for designing professional learning, providing coaching, and collaborating with the office of School Support and Improvement, Title 1, ESOL, curriculum team, and the office of the Chief Operating Officer to ensure the lens of equity is being used to examine practices, policies, and procedures that impact outcomes for students and their families. 

During his time as director of equity, he successfully co-lead efforts to incorporate equity into the professional growth systems for all three unions.  The work of closing the opportunity gap was also elevated by making it an essential part of the school improvement process.  The unit designed and implemented training for 26,000 employees focused on cultural proficiency and implicit bias and provided ongoing training for each of our 206 schools. Troy is responsible for ensuring that schools continuously reflect on their practices that create barriers to equitable learning outcomes for every student, but paying particular attention to African American and Latino students. As part of his role, Troy is responsible for designing and delivering professional learning for administrators on cultural proficiency, racial equity, and social-emotional learning in addition to developing professional learning for cluster principals focused on system messages.

Troy has served in or acted in a variety of roles during his tenure with Montgomery County Public Schools.  Some of these roles include:

  • Adjunct Professor, McDaniel College, Westminster, Maryland - taught introductory and leadership courses for the Excellence and Equity Certification Program                   
  • Acting Director of Professional Learning - responsible for setting the vision for professional learning for the district                                             
  • Acting Director of School Support and Improvement,                                          
  • Principal, Beall Elementary School, Rockville Maryland - successfully led a school of 700 students and was recognized for student achievement and parent satisfaction data  
  • Assistant Principal, Oakland Terrace Elementary School, Kingston, MD - assisted in leading a school of 800 students under the leadership of an award winning principal     

Troy enjoys being able to bridge his artistic spirit into designing professional learning to not only engage but enlighten his participants. As a teacher, he was often told by leaders that he would never enjoy being an administrator because there wasn't much room for creativity.  His ability to understand different perspectives engage and sustain education in conversations about the impact of race, ethnicity, and culture on teaching, leading, and learning.

Why is a doctoral program important to you?

My entire career has been spent educating others.  I love being a student and having the luxury of time to explore topics in depth and to make connections to the work of racial equity.  The doctoral program at Hood College will allow me to hear different perspectives from colleagues from diverse backgrounds that will push my thinking, and hopefully I will do the same for them as we learn together.

Career Highlights

While instructing for the National Academy for Professional Development (NAPD), in 2009-2012, Amy realized her passion for training and leading others in their journey to professional excellence.  Amy began an action plan to follow her passion and start her own training business after graduating from the HELM Senior Leadership Program in April 2015, and Rogers Consulting LLC began in December 2015.

Before starting her own business, Amy served in a number of managerial and leadership positions in for-profit and non-profit organizations, including:

Career Highlights

After completing his initial coursework at Hood College, Michael Dillman began his career in education as a teacher at Governor Thomas Johnson High School. During this time he developed his skills as a classroom teacher and began taking on roles that fostered an interest in leadership. He began working with student leaders, supervising clubs and activities, and also began developing future teachers through his work as the professional development school coordinator. During that time he returned to Hood College, pursuing a degree in Educational Leadership, ultimately assuming his first administrative assignment as an assistant principal at Linganore High School. Michael later served as assistant principal at Tuscarora High School. It is during that placement where he was given the opportunity to supervise specialized programs. This experience allowed him to expand his leadership skills to cultivate a focused learning community based on leadership, professional development and personal growth. In 2016, Michael was promoted to principal at Brunswick High School in Frederick County, Maryland.

Michael, along with his wife and three children, resides in Frederick, Maryland. In his spare time, he enjoys his backyard garden, often watching over his collection of fig trees, taking family vacations to his favorite destination, Walt Disney World, and watching his sons and daughter participate in their many activities.

Leadership requires strategic thinking and the ability to see what needs to be done; understand the underlying forces impacting student learning; and, the courage to initiate actions to support student achievement.  Cheryl has had the opportunity to coach and supervise novice and veteran principals as well as contribute to the development of teacher leaders.  Organizing time to develop relationships with the principals in order to assess the level of coaching and direction needed and collaborating with central office partners plays a vital role in getting results for students.  It is through strategic and consistent supervisory and coaching visits focused on data monitoring and analysis, cultural proficient instruction, professional learning, collaborative planning, and organizational excellence that schools are able to achieve results for students.

Career Highlights

Katherine Gull attended the University of Maryland, College Park and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, with a concentration in Spanish. While at UMCP she joined Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education; worked with Mary PIRG, a student led, student funded, non-partisan advocacy group; and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Washington D.C.  Katherine also taught English in an orphanage in Catacamas, Honduras. She assisted in building a Red Cross Center in Comayagua, Honduras. Upon graduation Katherine worked for Charles County Public Schools as a Foreign Language teacher. Katherine was also an Odyssey of the Mind Coach and a sponsor of the International Club.

Katherine Gull was awarded the Sharon Christa McAuliffe Scholarship from the state of Maryland to return to school at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she earned her Master of Education in Teaching English Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). During her program, Katherine presented her action research on the effectiveness of teacher feedback in the adult English learner at Washington Area TESOL conference (WATESOL) and New York State TESOL conference (NYSTESOL). Professional Goals

I grew up the daughter of a Navy sailor and travelled extensively around the world. My exposure to diverse cultures, different languages, and different ways of life have given me a unique, global perspective. Education is the variable that positively changes lives on a regular basis, regardless of country of origin. Resident Program Coordinator/Head of Transportation/Alternate Assisted Living Manager, Brookdale Olney

Career Highlights

While attending Hood College to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Society in 2008, Kelly aspired to attend law school and become an attorney. While attending Hood and upon graduation, Kelly completed an internship with the Frederick County States Attorney’s Office and played an important role in the Youthful Offender’s Program. While working with the Youthful Offender’s Program, Kelly worked with Michael Folio to start up the Teen Court Program in Frederick County. Law was something Kelly was very passionate about, and after graduation, she received a job at local law firm, DeOrsey and Thompson. It was here that Kelly returned to Hood College to obtain her Master of Arts degree in Human Sciences and realized that working with the elderly and dying was her true calling. Taking courses in Gerontology and Thanatology spoke to Kelly, and she made the decision to make a complete career change. While obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree, Kelly worked with children in a daycare setting and with children with special needs, so taking care of others was something near and dear to her heart and an area that she wanted to get back to. Before graduation in May of 2013, she obtained her Certificate in Thanatology. Not long before graduation, she went to work for Eldercare of Damascus as their Center Manager. Eldercare of Damascus was an adult daycare that cared for low income elderly in Montgomery County that suffered from Alzheimer’s and Dementia, various mental disorders and other issues associated with aging. This is where Kelly felt at home and knew she was truly making a difference in people’s lives. Kelly got the opportunity to transfer to Brookdale Olney as their Resident Program Coordinator in January 2015. In this role she was able to form one on one relationships with residents and families and work hands-on with them on a daily basis. While at Brookdale Olney, along with leading daily programs for the residents, Kelly took on the role as the Head of Transportation and became a transportation and programming trainer for the new hires in the district. Kelly’s thirst for knowledge and desire to learn lead her to become a Certified Assisted Living Manager in the State of Maryland in 2016. With this certification, Kelly is able to lead a community as an Executive Director when she receives the proper training. Moving to the operations side of Assisted Living is the next step for her career, and she is working towards obtaining a position as the Business Office Manager in another community. This position will allow Kelly to learn the ins and outs of running an assisted living community and give her the training and knowledge to be able to lead a community as their Executive Director in the future.

Kelly enjoys a variety of activities outside of her career and pursing her education. Kelly loves spending time with her boyfriend Pat and their dog Kona. Along with Pat, she spends as much time with her family as she can. One of her hobbies is collecting pigs, something she has been doing since she was a child. Working out on a daily basis is another hobby, and she also plays on a kickball team and in a bowling league during the year.

The Doctoral Program is important to me because it is the ultimate intellectual goal I want to achieve. Aside from being of personal significance to me, I believe that with obtaining my doctorate I can better lead others and make a difference in the career field that I am in. Working with the elderly requires a lot of patience and dedication, and with a doctorate I believe I can lead others to be as dedicated to the field that I am. The Doctoral Program at Hood speaks to me because it is at my Alma Mater and I love the individualized learning that I have achieved here over the years. The program itself offers the kind of learning opportunity I have always looked for, one where we all work together to make sure we work to our upmost potential and we all walk across the stage as one.

Career Highlights

Tomás Holloway has served with Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) since 2005.  DISA is the premier Information Technology provider for the Department of Defense (DoD). The agency employs over 10,000 military, civilian and contract personnel. DISA provides a globally accessible enterprise information infrastructure in direct support to joint warfighters, national level leaders, and other mission and coalition partners across the full spectrum of military operations.

Since November 2017, Tomás has served as the Chief of the Lifecycle Support Section, Acquisition and Life Cycle Support, for the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). His branch delivers centralized, day-to-day acquisition management and process improvement of acquisition contracts through Clean Sheet. Clean Sheet is a fact-based methodology used to identify potential cost avoidance through the optimization of contract requirements, which equips the Contracting Officer with increased negotiation influence. Defense Information System Agency has employed him since October 2005.

From 2015 until 2017, he served with the Mission Partner Engagement Office (MPEO) (or DISA Directorate level customer service offices, later renamed the MPEO) and one of the pinnacles of Tomás’ career was in the Service Level Management Section. The team spearheaded the creation, implementation and continual process improvement of the DISA Requirement Management Process (DRMP). The DRMP provided an agency workflow for the coordination, processing, and potential fulfillment of all Mission Partner-requested services. It combined over six different implementation processes into a single standardized governing process for the entire agency to follow. The design of the DRMP included flexibility to accommodate all services provided by DISA and any partner initiated changes to existing workload.

Tomás honored his country with 15 years of service as an active duty Air Force Airman and 5 years with the Air Guard. The culmination of his career were Action Officer for two International Logistics Conferences - the Pacific Area Senior Officer Logistics Seminars and the Security Assistance Training Program Management Review, under U.S. Pacific Command, Oahu Hawaii. Together, these conferences hosted over 30 Pacific-rim nations and U.S. Allied partners. Additionally while assigned to the 3rd Combat Communications Support Squadron in Oklahoma, he mapped out, organized, trained, and directed a helpdesk staff of six airman, supporting over 150 personnel in the squadron.

Career Highlights

Vera is currently the CEO for Advanced Behavioral Health, Inc. (ABH). ABH provides outpatient mental health services, medication management, and psychiatric rehabilitation for children, youth and families, and serves 9 counties in Maryland. Vera started with ABH in 2013 as a clinical supervisor, to supervise, train and coach clinical staff to further develop their clinical skills. In 2015, the Frederick office was launched, and she became the site director, facilitating in the growth of the clinic from having two part-time staff to having 3 prescribers and over 35 clinicians. In 2017, she was promoted to Program director and later in 2018 to chief executive officer.

Prior to her work with ABH, Vera worked for Montgomery County Child Welfare Services for approximately 14 years. She began her career as a front-line worker, investigating allegations of child abuse and neglect, and was promoted to a supervisor in 2009. During her time with the county, Vera worked with the Child First program, training prosecutors, social workers, forensic interviewers, pediatricians, and nurses in forensic interviewing and witnesses for court proceedings. Vera also managed the after-hours crisis work, was the child welfare ombudsman for the county, and was responsible for educating the public about child abuse reporting.

Additionally, while working for the county, she also worked as a Crisis Therapist at Suburban Hospital, providing clinical mental health evaluations in the Emergency Department. In this position, she assessed and made appropriate treatment recommendations for homelessness, substance abuse, and inpatient and outpatient treatment for children, adolescents and adults, in addition to her part-time position of teaching Child Welfare Practice and Policy at Hood College.

Prior to her work with the county, Vera provided clinical social work services in the inpatient acute unit for individuals with serious mental health issues and facilitated group therapy, individual therapy, and completed psychosocial assessments.

Vera enjoys spending her free time with her husband and two children, as well as traveling and participating in various hobbies such as learning piano and tennis.

Why is a doctoral program important to you?

It is my life’s dream to obtain a doctorate degree. It is the anti-story to the story that could have been my story. My mother, who was diagnosed as Intellectually Disabled, raised me on a subsidized income until I was ten years old. She died at the age of 40 years of heart and kidney failure.  My aunt, her sister, adopted me, and I was afforded a home, although of limited resources, full of love. I am here today as an educator, due to my family’s expectations, teacher mentors, hard work and grace.

The Hood Doctorate program is attractive to me because it is a cohort model, accommodates working learners, and aims to develop and train scholar-practitioners. The cohort model is very familiar to me. I obtained my master’s degree in Educational Leadership at Hood College. The Master’s program was a cohort model and had a capstone project component. Although it was rigorous, the ability to work very closely with other like-minded thinkers and educators contributed to my growth of knowledge and my success in the program. The relationships that were built amongst my other cohort members and I became the foundation for great sharing of ideas, clarification of thoughts and forward movement towards completion of many tasks. In addition to the relationships, it provided a forum for a variety of perspectives, theories, opinions, and beliefs to collide in a positive way that helped deepen the learning experience for everyone. The level of attentiveness that was shown by the professors and the program faculty was personalized and caring.  As an adult learner, I thrived in that environment by being part of the collective, creating support systems with and among others. I was able to anchor my learning to experiences.  It created lasting professional and personal relationships. As a result of Hood's cohort model, I was able to achieve my goal of becoming an educational leader. I look forward to pursuing my doctorate degree in this type of model.

As a scholar-practitioner, there is a sense of urgency to learn and apply knowledge that will have an impact on my current school community. I serve a very diverse population of students that are impacted by poverty and challenged by lack of access to a multitude of tools for success.  My school population represents the following demographic data:  55% African American, 30% Hispanic, 65% FARMS, and 24% ESOL.   As an educational leader, I ponder and collaborate daily to make decisions that will help my students achieve at high levels and motivate them to be better thinkers and problem-solvers. The Hood Doctoral Program excites me as its mission is to train and develop for the purpose of advancing and sustaining my school/organization.  As I collaborate with other leaders, my hope is the knowledge that I obtain will extend to helping other surrounding communities and possibly my school district as a whole.

Career Highlights

Even from an early age, Michael Lucido enjoyed working with people of all ages. In college, he knew that teaching would allow him to engage meaningfully with people. After graduating college with a degree in history, Michael studied Latin at the University of Maryland at College Park, where he led discussion sections for their undergraduate introductory course, Greek and Roman mythology. There, he reaffirmed his desire to be in the classroom. In 2011, he started teaching high school Latin at Salisbury High School in Salisbury, North Carolina, where he received his teaching credentials. In a couple of years, Michael received a job offer to teach middle and high school Latin for Loudoun County Public Schools, both at Smart’s Mill Middle and Tuscarora High School. At Smart’s Mill Middle School, he became the lead world language and cultures teacher in 2016. In the summer of 2018, Michael was named a district curriculum leader for Latin. Since 2012, he has led three trips with over 80 students abroad to Europe.

A teaching leader.

Directly out of college in 1993, Susan took a teaching role with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Northwest.  At a small elementary school in Woodburn, Oregon, Susan held the position of “Peace and Social Justice Teacher” for grades K-8. In what was to become a seminal role, Susan built a curriculum teaching self-esteem, self-governance and problem-solving to young people from age five through thirteen.  Her exploration of teaching autonomous-living skills to children led Susan to discover the Montessori method. Susan attended the Washington Montessori Institute in Washington, D.C., where she earned both her AMI certification and her master’s degree in Education from Loyola University in Baltimore with a summa cum laude designation.

After teaching in a Montessori environment, Susan thought she “left” teaching to take a corporate role with Allegis Group. With no formal business education, Susan applied Montessori principles and practices to her work at Allegis Group. At Allegis, Susan held increasing roles in recruiting, sales, consulting management, digital marketing, strategic technology advising, product development, business intelligence and innovation operations. In her present role as agile product development leader for innovation technologies, Susan is merging her skills in business, technology and product development with her underpinnings in education. 

Susan loves spending time with her former high-school sweet-heart, now husband, James Lightbourne. She and James moved to Frederick in the summer of 2017. They share a home downtown Frederick with Ella, their 95 lb. black lab.

Why is a doctoral program important to you?

A leader has an ethical responsibility to teach. And, in teaching, a leader has an ethical responsibility grow the next generation of ethical leaders. I want to be as effective in this capacity as possible.  

Additionally, in our communities, we have a pressing need to not only answer complex questions but also to ask insightful, heart-of-the-matter questions. We need to pay far less attention to hierarchies and inertia and far more to what can be if we collaborate. The root and common options are un-earth-able.

In this program, I am honing my leadership skills, becoming very clear about my values and goals, and directing my focus to catalyze much needed change.

After graduating from Wheaton High School, in Silver Spring, Maryland, Joshua Munsey attended Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, before transferring to the University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP). At UMCP, Joshua earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature.  After graduating in 2001, he secured a position as a paraeducator with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).  He worked as a paraeducator at both Wheaton High School, and the John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA). Subsequently, he entered the Special Education Teacher Immersion Training (SET IT) program with the Johns Hopkins University.  He earned his Master of Science degree in Special Education, Mild to Moderate Disabilities, in 2004.  He earned a position as a Special Education Teacher at Wheaton High School, where he also coached football, wrestling, volleyball and softball, before transitioning to Clarksburg High School. 

While serving as a Special Education Teacher at Clarksburg High School, Joshua coached football and wrestling, while also earning his Administrator I certification from McDaniel College.  He then became the Resource Teacher for Special Education at Clarksburg High School.  After leading the Learning for Academic Disabilities (LAD) program at Clarksburg for 3 years, Joshua returned to RICA as the Assistant Principal.  After 3 years as the Assistant Principal, Mr. Munsey transitioned to Wheaton High School for a brief period, before he returned to RICA as the principal.

Joshua loves spending time with his family, which includes his wife of 18 years, Jennifer, as well as his children, Gabriella, 16, Joshua Jr., 14, and Kelsi, 12.  Additionally, he enjoys exercising, watching and playing sports, and watching his children participate in softball, wrestling, basketball, and lacrosse.

Why is a doctoral program important to you?

My entire professional life, I have put the best interest of children, from my perspective, first.  As I have grown and experienced multiple perspectives and responsibilities in the field of education, I have come to learn that I have a commitment to personal and professional growth to galvanize that purpose.  I have core values of passion, collaboration, authenticity and work ethic that allow me to move adults, but the opportunity to earn a doctorate will allow me to ground that work with research and credibility.  I have often found myself needing to convince others (as well as myself) of the integrity and quality of my work and purpose, and this opportunity will allow me to do that with concrete research and credibility.

Career Highlights

Bridget Plitt is a training and development professional with over 25 years of experience designing, developing, and implementing training solutions and systems. For the past five years, she has been serving as the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s (OCC’s) Director for Educational Program Development in the Office of Continuing Education. In this capacity, Bridget leads a team of managers, instructional designers, developers, and media specialists in the creation and ongoing maintenance of agency training and education solutions. Before joining the OCC in 2013, Bridget led the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Supervision Learning and Development team in the design, development and delivery of their Examiner Commissioning Program. Prior to joining the CFPB, Ms. Plitt assisted the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System’s Division of Consumer and Community Affairs with the management, development, and ongoing execution of their Examiner Commissioning Program. Bridget has also worked for a number of strong Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, including Stanley Black & Decker, Marriott International, the National Institutes of Health, the Transportation Security Administration, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Ms. Plitt holds a Master of Arts degree in Instructional Systems Development and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Imaging and Digital Arts from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Hood College and is a lifetime member of Phi Kappa Phi.

Personal Goal

My greatest hope is to learn every day, to set a pace of life that does not prevent me from seeing beauty in all its forms, and to travel and experience as much of this world as possible with the ones I love.

My ongoing professional goal is to create work and life environments where education and development are a joy, where personal and collective achievements are not only possible but probable, and where service of others is at the heart of all efforts.       

Why is a doctoral program important to you?

Hood College’s Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership is essential to me at this time in my personal and professional life. Not only does the program curriculum align directly with my personal values and areas of desired intellectual growth, it is also structured to build a true scholarly community and an extensive professional network. The program’s cohort learning structure provides candidates with a rich, diverse, and highly experienced community of practice. From my professional and academic experiences, I know that this type of learning environment opens unexpected doors to discovery and growth, and I have no doubt that I will mature as a leader as I pursue my doctorate.

Career Highlights

Shelia Shipmon-Friedli’s passion for science led her down a path of biomedical research.  She graduated from University of North Carolina at Pembroke with honors.  As a MARC and Chancellor Scholar, she participated in ongoing research. She presented research projects at Regional and National conferences.  As a Biology major /Chemistry minor, she continued her education at University of Maryland at College Park in Animal Science.  She worked at several research facilities such as National Institutes of Health, NIADDK and NIMH.  She also researched a possible treatment for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus at the Renal Pathology Lab at the UNC-Chapel Hill. 

While at the University of Maryland at College Park, Shelia taught an animal science lab.  She found teaching challenging and very rewarding.  Thus, she pursued a career in teaching.  As a lifelong learner Shelia returned to school, getting her advanced teaching certificate in secondary science.  During her tenure as a teacher, she also held several leadership positions, such as Extended Day Coordinator, Science Academy Coordinator, team leader, science department head, teacher mentor, PLC coach, and science fair coordinator.  As a math / science teacher, she broadened her teaching methods by taking a two-year training course for teachers at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.  Using their techniques of integrating arts into instruction, she was able to change the platform of teaching to one that reached all children.  After being observed by a psychologist, she was invited to speak in congress as a representative for them about children with special needs.

Shelia also works with her family business, Friedli Enterprises.  She serves as a project manager.  As an international/national company, it is critical to understand the language and culture of the business world.  Thus, she earned a Master of Business Administration degree, with a concentration in Management at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  Friedli Enterprises participates in health seminars and health fairs, host charity events, etc.  As project manager she has learned to treat every obstacle as an opportunity.

Shelia’s favorite pastime is spending time with her family, pets and church. She enjoys interior decorating, gardening and writing. She is determined to one day become a prolific author.

Career Highlights

Mary serves as the Coordinator for Secondary Science in the Howard County Public School System in Maryland, where she has led efforts to transform the district’s science classrooms into inquiry-rich, student-centered environments where all students develop scientific literacy so they can be active and contributing citizens and pursue further study in science if they desire.  Prior to assuming her responsibilities in Howard County, Mary served as Science Resource Teacher in the Carroll County (Maryland) Public School System.  Mary earned her National Board Certification in Science/Adolescents and Young Adults in 2007 while a teacher and Science Department Chairperson at Westminster High School in Westminster, Maryland.  She has also taught students in Swoope, Virginia and Charlottesville, Virginia.

Mary has been active in leading science education efforts in Maryland since 2003 through her involvement with the Maryland Association of Science Teachers (MAST) and the Maryland Science Supervisors Association (MSSA).  She served as president of both organizations.  Nationally, she is active in the National Science Teachers Association and serves on the NSTA Council as District III Director.  She has and continues to serve on several NSTA committees. 

Prior to entering education, Mary served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy. 

Mary’s hobbies include swimming, running, reading, and exploring the world of kale salads.  She has completed the annual 4.4 mile Great Chesapeake Bay Swim twice and has dabbled in triathlons.

Career Highlights

Michael graduated from Hornell High School and received his bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management and Rural Development form West Virginia University. He has spent the last six years implementing water quality programs with soil conservation districts across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Michael is now the watershed restoration specialist for the City of Gaithersburg in Montgomery County, Maryland. He strives topromote the City's water quality and environmental programs and initiatives; organizes and conducts public education programs, outreach events, workshops, and volunteer-based environmental programs, often in conjunction with other local jurisdictions. Reestablishing and maintaining ecological functions in streams, as well as fostering watershed health, is a lifetime passion of his.

People need nature — and now more than ever — nature needs people. For ages, conservation scientists have struggled to transform novel research into everyday stewardship. Through an integrated curriculum, successful doctoral candidates will learn ways to bridge the gap between philosopher and practitioner. In the same way, the program will aid me in my quest to empower the community to embrace environmental stewardship.
