April 2: Student Musical Theatre stages Spelling Bee

Monday, April 2, 2012

FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College Student Musical Theatre will present the award winning musical comedy "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" April 19-21 in the College's Brodbeck Music Hall.

The show centers on a fictional spelling bee—set in a generic school gymnasium—in which six quirky adolescents compete in a contest run by three equally quirky adults.

Unusual aspects of the show include inviting four audience members onstage to compete with the six cast members, and an improv comedian who provides ridiculous examples when asked by the contestants to use the spelling words in a sentence.

Evening performances are April 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and April 21 at 7 p.m.; a performance appropriate for children will be staged April 21 at 3 p.m.

The performances are free, however donations will be accepted. Light snacks will be available for purchase.

The Hood College Student Musical Theatre was founded in fall 2010 by students Ashley Birdsell and William Lewis. Last season the troupe debuted two well-received cabaret-style shows; this will be its first musical.

The student-run organization's mission is to bring musical theater to Hood and the surrounding community while providing leadership opportunities for its student performers and executive board members.
