Jill Hermes serves as the Director of the Hood College Career Center and Office of Service Learning.

Jill provides leadership to the department and guides the staff in helping our students uncover their passion through a variety of experiential learning opportunities. These include internships, civic engagement and community networking. As a certified Myers Briggs Facilitator, she enjoys sharing career assessment workshops with the campus community. Jill earned her bachelor’s degree from Hood College and spent over 20 years in the workforce development and staffing industry before coming back to Hood to oversee the career center and office of service learning.

Jill currently serves on the Board of Director for the Mental Health Association of Frederick County, The Frederick County Workforce Development Board, and the Hood College Alumni Executive Board. She completed her master’s degree in human sciences in 2016. She embraces life-long learning and is passionate about helping our students navigate their educational journey while at Hood and also beyond their college experience. When not on campus, Jill is most likely spending time with her family and friends, taking a power walk, or relaxing with her beloved Golden Retriever, Sysco.

Tiziana Cavinato, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of biology, who serves as the health professions advisor in the career center and office of service learning.

As the health professions advisor, Cavinato advises students throughout their preparation for successful admission to health related professional programs; convenes and works with Hood’s health profession advisory committee; and coordinates with other campus offices to advance the health professions at Hood. Additionally, Cavinato represents the health professions at admission activities, summer orientation and Frederick community events. Also, Tiziana serves as the advisor for the pre-health professions club.

When you see her running around in the biology department in her casual attire, she is usually teaching human anatomy and physiology. Many anatomy and physiology students are her pre-health advisees, allowing her to know the students both personally and academically, gaining insight into their strengths that will make them the perfect candidate!

Cavinato was born in Italy and received her Ph.D. in pathophysiology and genetics from the University of Pisa. She came to the United States for postdoctoral training at the National Cancer Institute in the field of immunology. She joined Hood College as an adjunct biology instructor in 2011. Then, Tiziana was promoted to visiting assistant professor in 2012 before becoming an assistant professor in 2013. In February 2016, she became a Consular Correspondent for the Italian Consulate. In this volunteer position, Tiziana assists Italian and American citizens in Maryland with documents and a variety of other issues.

Cavinato enjoys the outdoors. Weather permitting you will see her bicycling to work on her Italian Bianchi bike. She loves spending time with her family, cooking and gardening.

Bre Harwood '16

In this position, she works to bring community service and civic engagement opportunities to Hood and believes every student can be a difference maker. Bre earned her associates degree in general studies from Frederick Community College, her bachelor’s degree in communication arts from Hood College and will begin pursuing a master’s degree in human sciences in the fall of 2016.

Bre has a passion for volunteering in the Frederick community and beyond. During her two years at FCC, she led students to serve lunch at the Frederick Rescue Mission, volunteered with the ARC of Frederick, and travelled to Goldsboro, NC and Wilmington, NC to help build homes through Habitat for Humanity. While completing her undergraduate studies at Hood, she participated in Alternative Break trips, Civic Engagement Awareness Week, and organized a toy drive to benefit the Frederick Rescue Mission. She still regularly volunteers at the Frederick Rescue Mission and the Frederick Community Action Agency.

You can almost always find Bre smiling or laughing, sharing motivational quotes with others, and doing the best she can to make the world a brighter, happier place.

In her current role, she works with a variety of organizations to provide recruitment opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, Maura collaborates with colleagues in the office providing the logistical support for the career center events. Maura earned her associates degree’s in general studies from Montgomery College – Germantown and her bachelor’s degree in English Literature from University of Maryland – College Park. Currently, she is finishing her master’s degree in humanities at Hood College with an expected graduation date of September, 2016.

Maura brings to her position an understanding of career transition. Prior to coming to Hood in October 2008, Maura worked as a Real Estate Legal Assistant for over 19 years at a local Real Estate law firm. Additionally, Maura is an alumna docent of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and a member of the American Friends of Attingham, the American affiliate of the Attingham Summer School for the Study of British Country Houses. In the community, she is a volunteer with the Frederick County Commission For Women and the Middletown Arts and Activities Council - MAAC. At Hood, she has been a facilitator for the Hood College First Year Reads Program since its inception in 2011. This year she had the privilege to service on the First Year Reads Book Selection Committee.The Hood College Graduate Student Association (GSA) is an organization promoting graduate student involvement, where Maura held the position of Vice President. During her free time, Maura enjoys watching movies and visiting historical sites with her husband and five children.

In her current role, she works with undergraduate students in a variety of ways from résumé reviews, mock interviewing and internship/job search strategy as well as holds seminars on campus ranging from LinkedIn training to Myers Briggs Type Indicator workshops. Lana earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and art from Salisbury University and her master’s degree in human sciences from Hood College.

Lana has a passion for education and professional development. In the community, she is a board member of THRIVE Women in Business through the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Detrick Alliance’s Education committee, Frederick County Society of Human Resource Manager’s Workforce Readiness Committee as well as Hospice of Frederick County’s annual gifts committee. She volunteers with Frederick County Public Schools with senior interviewing and serves at the Frederick Community Action Agency. On Hood’s campus, Lana is a member of the Global Studies Council as well as the Staff Council. When she isn’t working or chasing after her three year old daughter Georgia, you can find her on the stair stepper at Sport and Health, eating enchiladas at Cacique or on her couch watching her beloved San Antonio Spurs win every game they play.
