A number of professional examinations are required either by individual departments or by the graduate schools many Hood students attend after completing their undergraduate degrees.
The two separate types of examinations for the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) are the GRE General Test and the GRE Subject Tests.
The GRE General Test is given year-round electronically at various test centers; Hood does not administer this examination.
The GRE Subject Tests are administered by Hood in the fall and spring. These paper-based tests are given in eight subject areas:
- computer science
- literature in English
To register to take one of the GRE Subject Tests, go to the GRE Tests website and click on the “GRE Subject Tests” link. Then click the “Register Now” link on the right hand side of the page.

The Praxis Examination is part of the requirements for students considering becoming teachers and is required as part of the Hood education programs. The Praxis and consists of two separate levels of examination taken by students at different stages of their academic career.
The first is the Praxis Core examination, which should be completed by students intending to major in any educational field before the end of their second year of study. The Praxis Core covers general mathematics and reading comprehension skills and has recently replaced the requirement for the Praxis I.
The second level is the Praxis II, which contains the subject-based examinations. The specifics of the examination will vary depending on the particular focus of students’ educational program as will the particular examinations that must be completed. Students must pass these examinations prior to their graduation from Hood. Students should consult with their academic adviser for the specific Praxis II examination required by their program.
Hood does not administer the Praxis Examination. The testing center closest to Hood is Frederick County Community College.
Students register for the Praxis Examinations by going to the ETS website. Additional questions and test preparation materials can also be found on the website.
