Housing Accommodations

For a non-disability related housing request (i.e. gender, religious or cultural), the student must email Residence Life at residencelife@hood.edu

Additionally, you must contact Residence Life , not Accessibility Services for questions on:  

• any general housing questions (roommates, housing lottery, room/furniture, residency requirements, etc.) 

• housing contract questions

Housing Accommodations (disability requests only):

A student seeking reasonable housing accommodations must qualify in keeping with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), and the FHAA (Fair Housing Amendments Act).  The Office of Accessibility Services, in consultation with the Housing Accommodation Committee, is responsible for evaluating whether to grant or deny a request for reasonable accommodation in college housing.

As a four-year residential college, learning to live in a community and share space with others is an integral part of students’ educational experience.  Hood College has a three-year residency requirement for full-time undergraduate students.

There are numerous campus locations that provide quiet spaces for studying (including study rooms in residential halls,  24-hour access to the Library-Commons & several academic buildings) that can also be reserved; therefore a request for a quiet, undisturbed space is considered a preference, not a medical necessity (i.e. including for ADHD and/or learning disability).  

Requests for particular housing assignments based on a student’s preference for a particular type of living environment, such as a certain type of room or building location or desire for a quiet, undisturbed place to study, will not be honored. A student's accommodation is considered after review of documentation, and only approved when determined that a standard residential assignment is not a viable option for this student.

Students: 

(1) You are not making a request for a specific housing assignment, but rather a request for a housing accommodation based on a documented, ongoing disability and whose disability documentation illustrates clear and substantial barriers in the Hood College living environment, and for whom a standard housing assignment with a roommate is not viable.

(2)Single rooms are reserved for individuals whose documentation illustrates substantial needs (a medical necessity), and for whom a standard housing assignment with a roommate is not viable. 

(3) Hood College does not grant accommodations solely on the submission of documentation, and/or recommendations of medical/mental health care providers, but on the documented functional limitations posed by the student’s disability in Hood College residential housing. 

(4) Housing accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis, and based solely on that individual student's medically necessary needs in Hood College's residential housing.

(5) Certain disabilities require documentation of current levels of functioning, thus housing accommodation requests do not automatically carry over to subsequent semesters. 

All Hood College students must have a housing contract before you can request a housing accommodation based on a disability.

Disability Housing Accommodation Process:

This multi‐faceted process and approval includes the student’s self‐disclosure and personal interview, the timely submission of detailed documentation of the disorder/condition, and an interpretation of the evaluation data. The Housing Accommodation form is required to be submitted for housing accommodation requests. The  medical provider will need to demonstrate the impact of the diagnosed condition on the major life activities that are directly connected to residence life housing, and provide information about previous accommodations and services used by the student related to the condition.

1. Incoming new students and current students with first time request: complete this Accessibility Registration Form 

2. The Housing Accommodation form (below) must be submitted.  

3. Housing accommodations requested will be reviewed by the Housing Accommodation Committee when the Accessibility Services Registration Form and Housing Accommodation Form are both received.   

4. Housing Accommodations can only be provided once all necessary documentation is submitted.

 Documentation that will not be accepted: 

• Notes handwritten on prescription blanks are not acceptable.  
• Handwritten letters (even if on letterhead) 
• Letters from medical provider even if on letterhead in lieu of the required Housing Accommodation Form
• Medical case notes or records from patients/patient portals in lieu of the Hood College Housing Accommodation form and/or a letter (following the above listed requirements) 
• Academic Accommodation Plans, IEP's and 504 Plans as documentation for a housing accommodation request

Deadlines & Submission:

In order to be guaranteed that you receive appropriate accommodations, you should submit your housing accommodation request form by the date below.

All approved housing accommodations must be reapplied for the next academic year and updated medical documentation may be requested.

• Continuing/Returning Students for 2023-2024 academic year: April 25, 2023 
• Incoming New Students/Current Students New Request (Fall 2023 Start): July 1, 2023 
• Incoming New Students/Current Students New Request (Spring 2024 Start): November 30, 2023

Housing accommodation requests are reviewed once the Accessibility Services Registration Form & the Housing Accommodation Form are both received. 

It may take two weeks or more (depending on time of year) to review housing accommodation requests.
