Hood College is proud to be one of only 20 colleges and universities selected nationally to collaborate with Google to host its Applied Computing Series. This Applied Computing Series will teach the foundations of computer and data science through hands-on, project-based coursework, topically designed to attract students who might not consider a technology career. The goal of this partnership is to increase undergraduate access to quality computer and data science education by leveraging new technologies and teaching techniques.

Hood College Computer Science professor, Aijuan Dong, Ph.D. was instrumental is bringing this partnership to Hood College. Dr. Dong describes the partnership in these words, "Developed by the Google instructional team and highly-regarded computer science academics, this Applied Computing Series leverages the tools and techniques used at Google and in the wider tech industry and will help our students develop data processing skills that can be applied to their own fields."

Through this partnerships, Hood College students will gain exposure to computer and data science and develop skills that can be applied to their own majors and immerse themselves in a project-based curriculum to help reinforce the computer and data science principles they’re learning.  They will also be able to position themselves for entry-level positions in the burgeoning data science workforce, and work with Google employees to learn about the tech industry’s working environments, challenges and nuances.

George Dimitoglou, Ph.D., Cybersecurity M.S. Program Director, was also involved in this Hood-Google partnership development. "This partnership with Google extends our department's long tradition in computer science education of offering high impact and high quality programs in data-intensive topics. It allows us to offer students from any background a unique opportunity to explore and learn on some of the most sought after topics topics in computing today: data science, data mining and machine learning."
