Federal Work Study

Students must qualify for the Federal Work Study Program based on their eligibility as reflected on the FAFSA.

Student workers are paid bi-weekly by check from the accounting office. Checks are mailed to your home or campus mailbox. Direct deposit is available, but you will need to set this up on your employee portal.

Undergraduate students in the Federal Work Study program:

  • Earn money for miscellaneous expenses.
  • Get hands-on experience and a feel for the "working world" while they're still in school.
  • Develop valuable work-related skills and professional behavior.
  • Build a stronger résumé.
  • Improve job search skills.

Consult your financial aid award letter. If you have not been awarded student employment and would like to be considered, please send an email to finaid@hood.edu with "Student Employment Request" in the subject line. 

 

If you received federal work study as part of your financial aid award, you are eligible to work on campus. There are many offices that provide opportunities for students to enhance their skills while making a little extra cash.

Current Federal Work Study opportunities are available in: Library, Athletics, and Registrar's Office.

 Additional off campus job opportunities can be found on Handshake or through the Career Center.

Students who qualify for federal work-study have a unique opportunity to consider a service-oriented job in the Frederick community.

Opportunities are available with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Historical Society, the Red Cross, the Department of Social Services, United Way, Frederick Memorial Hospital, Habitat for Humanity and many other organizations.

Full position availability can be found in the Career Center or through Handshake.

During fall orientation, there will be a job fair held for student employment.

Students will have the opportunity to talk with representatives from various departments on campus that have open positions. Many of them will have applications to fill out at their tables and may even interview you on the spot!

If you are interested in a community service job, representatives from various volunteer organizations in the Frederick community will be available during the Fall Service Fair. Students will have the opportunity to talk with these organizations concerning job opportunities in the Frederick area.

Students should consult with their supervisors for a scheduled amount of hours weekly. But, on average, most students work around 6 hours per week and may not exceed 11 hours per week.

Students are paid bi-weekly by check or direct deposit.

Students must submit a weekly timesheet in their Hood Employee Portal. Students can choose to set up direct deposit. If no direct deposit is set up, checks will be issued by the Accounting office and sent to student's campus mail box. 

No. These funds will not be considered a credit against the student account unless the student applies his/her check to the accounting office to pay toward the bill.
