Online Course Evaluation via Blackboard

The college conducts online course evaluations using the SmartEvals platform. Instructors can access their SmartEval account via Blackboard using a single-sign-on link.

To access your SmartEvals account:

  • Log in to Blackboard
  • Click into any course site
  • Click on the "Course Evaluation" button located in the left menu, or find the link in "Tools"

Once you have accessed your account, you can do the following from your instructor dashboard:

Adding course specific questions

Instructors who wish to add course specific questions or evaluations of a Teaching or Language Assistant, please send your request to assessment@hood.edu. Once an additional question set is added to your course, it will automatically populate every time the course is offered until the question set is unassigned.

Additional question sets are automatically added for Hybrid and Online Courses, First Year Seminar, and Honors Courses.

Communication plans

  • Take a moment in class to inform your students of the online course evaluation available through Blackboard. Remind students to complete their evaluation, let them know how you use evaluations and why their feedback is important to you.
    • Course evaluation dates are scheduled as follows:
      • Fall Semester: November 25 - December 11, 2019
      • Spring Semester: April 20 - May 3, 2020
      • Mid-semester evaluations are scheduled based on the course end date in PowerCampus
  • Students will receive an automated email invitation alerting them to the start of an evaluation period. Periodic reminders will be sent as long as the student still has uncompleted evaluations. Each time the students receive an email, an automated email will be sent to instructors with updates on response rates. A system wide announcement will be posted on Blackboard during the end of semester evaluation period.
  • Students can complete the evaluation at any time online during the evaluation period, but you can still allow class time for the completion of the evaluation using an iPad or any mobile device. You can also offer an incentive to increase your class response rate.
  • Instructors are welcome to enable their "thank you" feature to send a custom email to students who have responded.

Please contact the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment (OIRA) at assessment@hood.edu if you have any questions or would like to schedule a one-on-one session. If you require assistance download course evaluation results, please contact your department's Faculty Services Administrative Assistant.

How do I know whether students are responding?

  • Real-time response rate tracking is available at the course evaluation website. Faculty will be able to see the number of students who completed the evaluation out of the total number of students enrolled in the course, but not who has and has not responded.

When are results available?

  • The college policy prohibits anyone from seeing the evaluation results until all grades have been submitted. For a course ending early in the semester with a mid-semester evaluation period, you will need to wait until after all the grades for the semester have been submitted. Fall semester evaluations are released early January, spring semester evaluations are released late May/early June, summer session 1 evaluations are released in July, and summer session 2 evaluations are released in late August/early September.

How am I notified about my course evaluation results?

  • Instructors receive an automated email to their Hood email from SmartEvals stating that evaluations have been released along with an attached PDF of the instructor's evaluation results.

How do I access and download my results?

Can I export raw data (non-identifiable)?

  • Only administrative accounts can download raw data in Excel. Contact OIRA for assistance.
