Afghan Women Sponsored at Hood

The Allemall Foundation, along with Hood trustee Susan Whaley ’74, established the Afghan Women Scholarship fund for graduate study at Hood College in 2012. Foundation leaders Ed and Cathy Scott and Julia Soistman were recognized for their generosity at the International Graduate Students Welcome Reception in August. The scholarship will support Afghan women’s graduate education at Hood in the sciences. This year’s recipients, Aria Kazim and Maryam Faiz are enrolled in the Information Technology program.

In addition, Dr. Zyg Dembek, Graduate School Commencement speaker from two years ago, brought Dr. Sayed Shinwari to the reception.  Dr. Shinwari is a pediatrician and a leading member of the Afghani community in the Washington, DC area.  He has been featured in Voice of America videos aired in Afghanistan.
