Deferral Information
Students requesting a deferral of admission:
- Must have submitted their enrollment deposit prior to requesting a deferral
- Must submit a written request to defer admission detailing the reason for the deferral
- Deferrals are usually requested for a year but, under special circumstances, may be requested for a semester
- Typical reasons for deferring admission include:
- Travel or study abroad
- Earn money for college
- Pursue a sport or hobby
- Community service
- Health or family issues
- Provide a plan for how they will spend the semester or year
- Provide documentation on how they spent the semester/year
- Submit the request and plan by the deadline:
- July 15 for fall admission
- December 15 for spring admission
- After a deferral has been approved, contact the Hood College Admission Office no later than 2 months prior to the start of the requested semester/academic year to confirm their attendance and arrange for course registration and campus housing arrangements, if requested.
Hood College will:
- Reserve a place (and campus housing, if requested) for the student in the requested semester
- Renew the offer of institutional financial aid (scholarships and grants) in amounts similar to that initially offered* (pro-rated for any enrollment less than full-time and/or full academic year). Federal and state aid must be applied for annually and is subject to their own sets of regulations and policies.
- Offer the following partial student privileges during the deferral year:
- Library access
- Invitations to campus speakers, performances, exhibits and athletic events
- Career Center
- Student may take one Hood College course (online, only) during the deferral period, at no cost.
*Some scholarships and programs may require reapplication and are not guaranteed.
