Outside of Hood College, Dr. Joshi has completed research around natural resource management and the economic valuations of environmental amenities. Most recently, Dr. Joshi presented at the International Online Scientific-Practical Conference in Uzbekistan on "Nutrition Quality and Budget Constraint: Evidence from Panel Data.”

We sat down with Dr. Joshi to discuss his experience presenting at the conference, and why he decided to teach at Hood College.

Why Hood College - What made you choose to teach here?

Hood College’s student-centered small liberal arts college environment intrigued my interest in the college. The college provides an ideal platform for me to engage in teaching and learning in my areas of interest and specialties. It also offers so many opportunities to grow in my position and profession (which aligns with my personal and professional development strategy).

As a faculty member, do you have a certain mindset, theory, or teaching style?

I believe a teacher has an important responsibility to catalyze intellectual growth while simultaneously inspiring students to continue their personal and professional development.

My primary focus in teaching involves engaging students in deeper and experiential learning. My teaching goal (and philosophy) involves developing my students’ critical thinking, problem solving, and independent learning skills. My teaching methods incorporate experiential learning, and student centric and problem-solving curricula to prepare my students for leadership in our increasingly complex world.

What would you like your students to take away from your classes?

I aspire to equip my students with the broad scope and applications of core economic theories, including the quantitative skills of economics discipline necessary to execute the real-world applications with empirical rigor. I always strive to train my students to not only learn economic theories but to think and talk like an economist.

Tell us about your experiences presenting at the International Online Scientific-Practical Conference in Uzbekistan!

I was very excited to receive the invitation to present at the International Online Scientific-Practical Conference in Uzbekistan.

While the onsite presentation would have been the ideal and also since there were many other challenges to present at this international conference even remotely (such as different time zones), I was able to go back and forth with Dr. Bakhrom Kholbaev (the coordinator of the event) to find more effective way of delivering my keynote speech at the conference. We agreed that a recorded presentation would work best for all of us. Therefore, I provided a recorded presentation on the topic of “Nutrition Quality and Budget Constraint: Evidence from Panel Data.”

While I am looking forward to receiving more feedback from the wider conference audience, I have received an immediate appreciation certificate from the event organizers (Rесtоr оf Tashkent State University of Economics Sharipov Kongratboy Avezimbetovich and the conference coordinator Dr. Bakhrom Kholbaev).

Any other relevant or interesting information that you would like to share?

My skills and interest in research and teaching intersect with so many programs beyond The George B. Delaplaine Jr. School of Business at Hood College, primarily in interdisciplinary areas of environmental and natural resources economics and the economics of nutrition. I look forward to contributing to those programs in the future through my inter-departmental collaboration efforts.
