Mathematics Curriculum Expert to Speak at Hood College

FREDERICK, Maryland—Mathematics curriculum expert John SanGiovanni will give the 10th Annual Mathematics Education Lecture at Hood College on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. in Whitaker Campus Commons.

His talk, “Jumpstart Student Reasoning and Number Sense,” will cover developing understanding of numbers in students. In this session, participants will learn about dynamic, practical routines for developing number sense and fluency with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratio and operations. SanGiovanni will give a demonstration of ready-for-use resources and classroom clips that model how to use the resources. He will equip participants with student engagement activities that are simple and worthwhile.

SanGiovanni is a mathematics supervisor in Howard County, Maryland. There he leads mathematics curriculum development, digital learning, assessment and professional development for 41 elementary schools and more than 1,500 teachers. He is an adjunct instructor and coordinator of the Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leader graduate program at McDaniel College. He is an author and national mathematics curriculum and professional learning consultant.

Additionally, SanGiovanni is a frequent speaker at national conferences and institutes. He is active in state and national professional organizations and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
