Shahinur Alum

Dr. Md Shahinur Alam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Information Technology at Hood College. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the VL2 Center at Gallaudet University, where he led the NSF-funded Signing Avatars & Immersive Learning (SAIL 2.0) project. As part of that initiative, Dr. Alam spearheaded the development of ASL Champ!—an innovative virtual reality game that leverages animated signing avatars and real-time feedback to teach American Sign Language.

 

Prior to joining Gallaudet, Dr. Alam was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Optical Information Lab at Chungbuk National University in South Korea. He completed his Ph.D. in Information & Communication Engineering at Chungbuk National University, where he developed a pen-and-paperless air-writing system for virtual environments and pioneered image super-resolution techniques that advanced optical microscopy eightfold beyond conventional physical limits. He holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science & Engineering from Jashore University of Science & Technology, Bangladesh.

 

Dr. Alam’s research interests encompass human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. Among his prominent contributions is the air-writing technology, devised to replace traditional pen-and-paper input, and a cutting-edge VR-based ASL learning platform that has earned recognition at various academic gatherings.

 

With over 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, Dr. Alam is an active contributor to the fields of deep learning, immersive technologies, and HCI. He has served as a reviewer for over 30 academic journals, evaluating more than 150 research papers, and has been honored with multiple awards for best paper and best demonstration at leading conferences.
