The Dogs of Hood

XXXX

Hood has the kind of campus that attracts humans with dogs, and Hood faculty, staff and students are no exception (see President Ricker, left, with Penny, Lucy, and Granddog Evee). Canine companions gracing our halls and lawns make class, work and life at Hood richer and better.

Introducing:

Tintin, Cherry Liu's Dog

TinTin

Person:
Cherry Liu Ph.D.

I sometimes bring TinTin to my classes in HT. Colleagues and students like him a lot, he is very friendly.

Juniper Toby Peterson

Juniper

Person:
Toby Peterson
Library Director

Juni loves to meet the students, give them high-fives, and get some head scratches. The students think she's cute (who wouldn't?) and they enjoy playing with her and giving her treats. They also like to see Juniper's tricks. I don't bring Juniper to work very often but when I do, she works hard and crashes hard when we get home after a long day of work.

Hazel

Persons:
Mallory Huard, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History and Andrew Campbell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Counseling

I'm a professor in the History Department and I bring my dog, Hazel, to campus on occasion (maybe once or twice a semester) because she loves to meet people and she brings lots of smiles to my colleagues and students. She is an American pit bull terrier. My partner, Andrew Campbell, is a professor in the Counseling Department, and he also brings her to campus once in a while!

Sam likes to take long walks at night, and sometimes we end up walking through Hood. About once a semester, he also comes and visits my students, so he can get lots of pets and attention from them.

Lorelai

Person:

I like taking walks around Hood with my wife and my dog, Lorelai. We love watching people’s reactions when she jumps super high to chase a squirrel up a tree on campus.

Ripley and Fenn

Ripley

Person:
Charlotte Fahlbush '28

Charlotte is an undergraduate student, and Ripley is their service dog. Service animals play an important part in the educational, professional and personal successes of some students, faculty, and staff.

opal

Opal

Person:
Brenda Schildknecht-Hargett
Lecturer of Thanatology
In between my commute between homes in Delaware and Maryland, Opal may not have doggy daycare if no appointments are available. She has only been to class once, but since she loves everyone, she fits right in. Of course, I would not bring her to class unless all students approved.

Princess (RIP)

Brenda: I should also honor my "fur baby," Princess. She died in 2022, but not after leaving a mark on Hood with her attendance in class, in many Zoom meetings and Graduate School Online events, especially during the pandemic. Here is an email written by one of my online students after I shared with her the news of Princess’s death:
"I wanted to share that when I was looking into a Certificate program for Thanatology, I participated in the virtual open house at Hood College. It was here I saw you holding Princess in your lap. After the virtual open house, I told my partner about the cuteness of your dog and we both agreed how amazing it is to see others so fond of their animals. Princess became a part of my reasons for choosing Hood's certificate program as well as the compassion that was evident coming from you."
