Christoph Johnson, M.S.’26, is a multidisciplinary healthcare data scientist from The Bahamas with academic, research, laboratory and industry experience spanning the Caribbean, United Kingdom and United States. He recently completed his M.S. in health informatics at Hood College with a 4.0 GPA after previously earning degrees from the University of the West Indies and the University of Manchester, a Russell Group university. During his time at Hood College, he served as a technical lead intern and internship fellow with the MedStar–Georgetown Collaborative Center for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Research and Education (AI CoLab), where he contributed to healthcare AI and clinical analytics initiatives. His capstone research focused on predicting ICU complications using machine learning and physiologic data to support earlier risk identification in critical care environments.
Why did you choose Hood College for your graduate studies?
The main driving force behind my decision to attend Hood College was the program Professor Tim Coffin had put together. I carefully reviewed the curriculum and immediately recognized that it would help consolidate the missing pieces in my skillset while supporting the multidisciplinary learning approach I wanted for my career. I also chose Hood because I saw it as a strong opportunity to further propel my career trajectory, and being located in Maryland placed me in an excellent position professionally while still allowing me to remain close to family and friends.
How has the health informatics program helped your career?
So far, Hood College has helped me accomplish exactly what I set out to do: strengthen and complete my technical and professional knowledge base. During my time here, I excelled academically while gaining exposure to healthcare data science, clinical informatics, machine learning, database systems and healthcare technology.
I’ve also had opportunities to connect with and engage with professionals and organizations associated with some of the largest and most reputable healthcare technology and consulting companies in the industry. I’m excited to continue building on that momentum as I move into the next phase of my career.
What did you most enjoy about Hood College?
One of the things I appreciated most about Hood College was how welcoming and supportive everyone was. I enjoyed the course selection, the close-knit environment and the ability to communicate with essentially anyone on campus. Even while remaining focused academically, I built meaningful friendships and had experiences that I know I’ll remember for a very long time.
Do you have a favorite Hood memory?
Although my time at Hood went by incredibly quickly, one of the biggest things I realized during my time here was how supported and cared for I am both in life and on campus.
One of my standout memories was going cycling early one morning with a friend and unexpectedly completing the notoriously challenging “Hamburg” trail together. Neither of us fully realized what we had signed up for at first, but we kept pushing through despite the difficulty. Along the trail, there were signs saying things like, “Don’t quit now!” and “You can call yourself a real cyclist now. You did it!” as we climbed a route that even some motor vehicles struggle to handle. Strangers encouraged us along the way, and while others clearly had more experience and better equipment, we kept going anyway.
When we finally reached the top, we took a moment to appreciate the view before continuing onward—this time downhill at daunting speeds! Looking back, that experience became a metaphor for my academic journey, career, fitness and life overall. I didn’t accomplish everything alone, or without encouragement and motivation, and the journey was not always easy, but I learned to embrace challenges, trust the process, appreciate where I am and continue moving forward no matter how steep the climb felt at the time. Pressure can be an opportunity to transform.
Any other information or fun facts you would like to add?
Outside of academics, healthcare and technology, I have a strong background in competitive swimming and athletics, and I also worked as both a swim coach and lifeguard while at Hood. I wanted to find a way to pour into others not just academically, but professionally and personally as well, by helping them accomplish what they themselves realized was worth striving for.
