Meet Cameron Rogers, assistant director of graduate admission by day, novelist in his free time. Learn more The Graduate School's newest staff member and his life outside the office.
What attracted you to applying to The Graduate School at Hood College?
I am a Hood College double Blazer. I completed my bachelor’s in communication arts in 2017 and earned my master’s in humanities in 2025. My time as a graduate social media ambassador gave me a lot of insights into working at The Graduate School at Hood College, so by the time I earned my master’s, I knew I wanted to shift my career to the field of higher education. Hood was the perfect fit for me, both professionally and personally.
What activities keep you busy outside of work?
Exercise, writing and gaming! I’m a frequent visitor to the YMCA on Market Street in Frederick. I love writing original fiction in my spare time, both after work and on weekends. Aside from that, I enjoy playing a variety of video games, from action games to visual novels.
What was it like shifting from an undergraduate student to a graduate student?
There was about a five-year gap between earning my bachelor’s and starting my master’s at Hood College, so I didn’t need to readjust too much to the college experience. The biggest change came with the way graduate classes were structured. They only had one meeting a week at night, and in my first semester, I had to commute for an hour both ways to Hood College. I had to make the most of my time seeing faculty and students face-to-face. I would say it was a great experience overall.
What do you enjoy the most about your current position?
The people I work with! I feel so welcomed and at home with the Graduate School’s staff. Everyone has been so kind and helpful with my onboarding. It’s the best sort of work environment I could ask for.
What would you tell someone thinking about a graduate degree but who may be doubting their ability to balance it all?
You will need to balance your schedule and manage your time well, especially if you are working full time instead of part time. It helps that classes are all set after typical work hours.
The biggest reassurance I had was how accessible the professors were. Even outside of their typical office hours, they still found time to meet with me when I struggled with concepts in their classes. They want you to succeed, and that sort of support goes a long way. I felt like it was doable because of the family, friends and faculty who had my back.
Tell us something unique/special about you.
I self-published a young adult romance novel back in late 2023! It’s called Their Days Are Like Grass, and it’s set in Frederick, Maryland. Hood was kind enough to host my first book discussion in the library too.
