Hood College Brings “Educated” Author Tara Westover to Weinberg Center

FREDERICK, MD—Hood College presents An Evening with Tara Westover at the Weinberg Center for the Arts on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. Westover is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, “Educated,” her memoir of growing up in a Mormon survivalist home, and eventually escaping to earn a doctorate from Cambridge University.

This FREE ticketed event is presented by Hood College and sponsored by The Hanson Lecture Series through the Foundation for Enhancing Communities. Hood students with a valid student ID may pick up one ticket each at the Whitaker Information Desk/Switchboard, Monday, Jan. 27 through Friday, Jan. 31, noon-8 p.m.

Tara Westover was born in Idaho to a father opposed to public education; she never attended school. She spent her days working in her father's junkyard or stewing herbs for her mother, a self-taught herbalist and midwife. Taught to read by an older brother, her education was erratic and incomplete. She was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. After that first encounter with education, she pursued learning for a decade, graduating magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in 2008 and subsequently winning a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She earned an MPhil from Trinity College, Cambridge in 2009, and in 2010 was a visiting fellow at Harvard University. She returned to Cambridge, where she was awarded a PhD in history in 2014. In 2018, she published her memoir, Educated, which explores her struggle to reconcile her desire for education and autonomy with her desire to be loyal to her family. Educated was an instant commercial and critical success, debuting at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list and remaining on the list for more than a year.
