Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification

Hood College offers multiple programs to help students who have already completed a bachelor's degree earn eligibility for Maryland teaching certification. 

Requirements

Overview

The post-baccalaureate program is designed for those who have a bachelor's degree and who want to take the required coursework to earn Maryland teacher licensure in one of the following areas:

  • Early Childhood Education (PreK – Grade 3)
  • Elementary/Special Education (General Education Grades 1-6, Special Education Grades 1-8)
  • Art Education (PreK – Grade 12)
  • Spanish Education (PreK – Grade 12)
  • French Education (PreK – Grade 12)
  • Secondary Biology Education (Grades 7-12)
  • Secondary Chemistry Education (Grades 7-12)
  • Secondary English Education (Grades 7-12)
  • Secondary History Education (Grades 7-12)
  • Secondary Mathematics Education (Grades 7-12)

Students in the post-baccalaureate program take education courses and complete a sequence of internship experiences. In addition to education coursework, content courses may be required and can be taken along with education courses at Hood College.

Course Sequence and Schedule

All courses are offered in-person, primarily during the day, at Hood College, during the fall and spring semesters. After satisfying pre-requisite requirements, candidates complete the following 2-year sequence:

  • Phase I: two semesters (Fall, Spring) courses and a half-day-per-week internship  
  • Phase II: one semester (Fall) courses and a 1.5 day per week internship
  • Phase III: one semester (Spring) full time internship and one seminar course 
Tuition

Post-baccalaureate students are charged tuition at the general graduate education tuition rate. Maryland residents are encouraged to apply for the Teaching Fellows for Maryland Scholarship.

Application requirements:
  1. Complete application - Submit your application   and the information below:
    1. Official transcripts - submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities you have attended.
    2. Indicate how you will meet the MSDE Basic Skills requirement. Per the Maryland State Department of Education, teacher candidates applying for certification programs must demonstrate mastery of basic reading, writing, and math skills. This can be accomplished via Praxis Core; SAT, ACT, or GRE scores; or GPA. Candidates who submit a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on their most recently earned degree are not required to submit a basic skills assessment. In that case, a 3.0 GPA must be maintained throughout the program.
  2. Complete interview with education faculty

Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year. Students can apply to begin the post-baccalaureate program in the fall or spring semester by the deadlines listed below.

  • Fall Deadline - July 1
  • Spring Deadline- December 1
