With a background in communications and marketing, Christian brings a strategic and student-centered approach to his role, while also actively engaging in the local tech community through his involvement with TechFrederick.

Tell us about your educational and professional background.

I am currently working as an assistant director of graduate admission at Hood College. I am in charge of the pipelines for many of our STEM programs and am currently a student in the management information systems master’s program. My bachelor's degree is in communications.

How did you first become involved with the TechFrederick committee?

Our office team saw that TechFrederick was looking for more marketing committee members to help with event planning and overall organizational marketing. When I inquired, I learned that meetings would be flexible and the committee wasn’t very big, so I thought I might be able to help with my previous experience in communications and marketing.

Can you share more about your role on the committee and the initiatives you’re currently working on?

We’ve only had two meetings so far, so as far as role goes, there is still much to be decided upon. Overall, we did discuss how we want to make TechFrederick events as appealing as possible to both the local community and current members. We will be focusing on highlighting the benefits of joining TechFrederick and creating the best events for the community.

What impact do you hope to make through your involvement with TechFrederick?

I really enjoy TechFrederick events, whether it’s the networking breakfasts where we learn from a speaker or panelists about a specific topic or the workshop trainings (I attended a few AI focused ones). I think I’d really like for more people to learn about these events and be able to get involved with a warm, insightful and engaging community.

How has your experience at Hood College helped prepare you for leadership and community involvement in organizations like TechFrederick?

Admissions is marketing and sales in its own way. I’d like to think my professional experience both here at Hood and in previous positions have prepared me to be able to help market TechFrederick.

What advice would you give to current students or alumni who are interested in getting involved in professional or community-based tech organizations?

Just ask to be involved. I only became involved in TechFrederick events only recently (as part of my job here at Hood College), and even then, they were still more than happy to have me join. If there is something you are interested in doing, it’s not a bad idea to ask.
