Tell us about your educational and career background.
I am originally from Nairobi, Kenya, and grew up in London, New York, Maryland, Ethiopia and Kenya, and I have visited many other locations. I am a graduate student in the management information systems (MIS) program and am pursuing a project management certificate as well.
I previously earned my bachelor’s degree in simulation and game design, where I developed an interest in user experience, accessibility, technology and how digital systems shape people’s interactions with information.
I currently serve as the volunteer communications lead for my family’s nonprofit, the PATESI Foundation, which works to alleviate poverty related to period and postpartum bleeding. I also work as a graduate administrative assistant in the Graduate School while continuing to explore ways to bridge technology, creativity and problem-solving in my career. I enjoy learning about different cultures and languages, going for runs, nature walks and hikes, playing games, solving puzzles, traveling and being creative in a variety of ways.
Could you share more about your journey and how your international experiences have shaped who you are today?
Growing up with international experiences exposed me to different cultures, perspectives and ways of thinking. Moving between places taught me how to adapt quickly, connect with people from diverse backgrounds and appreciate different viewpoints. These experiences shaped my curiosity not only about how people interact with each other, but also with systems, technology and communities, which later influenced my personal and academic interests.
What drew you to Hood College and your chosen program, and how did your global experiences influence that decision?
My sister is actually a Hood alum from the thanatology program, so I learned about Hood through her initially. I also heard many great things about the wonderful community at Hood. Additionally, I was drawn to Hood College because of the opportunity to pursue a program that blends technology, management and business with real-world problem-solving. The MIS program stood out to me because it focuses on how information systems support organizations and people. I was already interested in how technology shapes experiences. My international perspective further reinforced the importance of designing systems that work for diverse groups of people.
As a graduate administrative assistant in the Graduate School, what does your role involve, and how has it contributed to your professional growth?
As a graduate administrative assistant in the Graduate School, I support various administrative and communication efforts that help ensure that graduate programs and events run smoothly. My role involves assisting with administrative tasks, supporting events and communications, and helping coordinate resources for graduate students.
One part of my role I have particularly enjoyed is managing the Campus Cupboard, an on-campus food pantry that provides essential resources and support to students in need. Through these responsibilities, I have gained valuable experience working in a professional academic environment while developing skills in organization, communication, collaboration and problem-solving. It has also given me a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into supporting graduate students and building a strong academic community.
Are there any courses, lecturers or events from Hood that were particularly memorable to you?
One of the things that has made my experience at Hood College so memorable is the combination of engaging courses, supportive professors and meaningful campus events.
A course that stands out to me is my Human-Computer Interaction class, which I am currently taking, as it allows me to explore how people interact with technology and how thoughtful design can improve digital experiences. Another impactful course was IT 530: Applied Database Systems, which introduced me to database models, security and administration. It made learning feel like solving a puzzle.
I have also been fortunate to learn from inspiring faculty members such as Professor Jim and Professor Johnson, and I have enjoyed attending campus events like international celebrations and Project Management Night Out, all of which have helped me connect with the community and made my time here even more meaningful.
What advice would you give to other students, especially those with international or mobile backgrounds, about finding community and making the most of their experience at Hood?
My biggest advice would be to stay curious and open to new connections. If you come from an international, mobile or global nomad background, it can sometimes feel like you are navigating multiple worlds at once, but that perspective and knowledge are a strength. Take advantage of opportunities to get involved on campus, attend events, volunteer in something you’re interested in and connect with classmates and faculty. You never know how even small conversations can lead to meaningful relationships and/or opportunities. I would also encourage students to embrace their unique experiences and perspectives. Your background can bring valuable insight into discussions, projects and collaborations. Finding community often starts with sharing your story and being open to learning from others.
