Tell us about your educational background, current program and your role as a biology graduate assistant.
I graduated from the University of Medicine 1, Yangon, with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. Now, I am pursuing a master’s degree in the biomedical science program at Hood College and working as a graduate research assistant in the biology department. As a GA, my duties include laboratory support (setting up labs and preparing materials for laboratory use), administrative support and tutoring students. Our assigned tasks vary each semester.
Why did you choose Hood College and the biomedical science program?
I chose the biomedical science program at Hood College because of its affordable tuition, research opportunities, small class sizes and experienced faculty members in various research fields.
What do you enjoy most about being a graduate student at Hood College?
The thing that I enjoy most as a graduate student at Hood College is the research I’m working on. I’ve always been passionate about science and healthcare, and the opportunity to work in this field is exciting for me.
You are completing a thesis with Professor Robert Kambic, Ph.D.—can you briefly share what your research focuses on and what excites you about it?
My research is about analyzing the hip and knee joint movements on different surfaces by using video-based pose estimation for gait analysis. Our data is obtained from walking on realistic and unpredictable natural surfaces. I’m currently collecting and processing data and am looking forward to analyzing the data. I’m excited about the data analysis outcome, and hopefully the study results will be able to contribute to the rehabilitation of gait patients.
How do you think your graduate experience at Hood is helping to prepare you for your future career and life goals?
Despite the heavy workload, I got to learn a lot in every class I took and explore interesting research topics and papers. And I gain experience working in labs as a graduate assistant, which will help me in my future career.
As an international student, what has your experience been like studying in the U.S., and what advice would you give to other international students considering Hood?
Studying in the U.S. hasn’t been the easiest, but so far, I’m enjoying the experience. Hood College has a lot to offer, so try to build a community here—talk to people, and you’ll make the most out of your student life at Hood.
