Department of Music

Music has always been an important component of the liberal arts. The Hood College Department of Music offers a music minor, a variety of music courses in history and theory (open to all students regardless of major/minor), individual instrumental instruction, and the opportunity to participate in performing groups.

Do you play an instrument? Have you ever wanted to? We offer music lessons (aka “applied music”) in most of the major instruments (strings, brass, woodwinds, keyboard, voice) as well as in composition and conducting. In our applied music program, students receive individual instruction from some of the metropolitan area's most outstanding musicians.

Our music ensembles include Choir, Chamber Singers, String Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. (Note that some of these groups require an audition.) All of these groups perform throughout the academic year, both on- and off-campus.

Dozens of professionals, including members of Hood's music faculty, perform on campus each year. The College's location near both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore attracts world-class musicians and exposes students and members of the community to a broad array of cultural opportunities. Departmental concerts are always free and open to the public.

The music department offers several courses that fulfill the Visual / Performing Arts category of the Core, as well as a course that fulfills the Global Perspectives requirement. Many students combine the music minors with other majors/minors in such widely diverse fields as education, marketing and business, computer science, and biology.
