Talk on Cultural Transformation and Gender

FREDERICK, Maryland—Kathryn Bond Stockton, a leading advocate for racial and gender equality, will speak at Hood College on March 29 at 7 p.m. in Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall.

Stockton, Ph.D., will present her lecture “I Was A Queer Child And So Were You,” in a humorous, accessible style, weaving memoir through cutting-edge theory. This talk will discuss important matters surrounding genitals, clothing and kissing. Stockton will consider the queerness of children and the new battleground where issues involving queer rights are currently being fought.

Stockton is a distinguished professor of English, associate vice president for equity and diversity, and dean of the School for Cultural and Social Transformation at the University of Utah, where she teaches queer theory, theories of race, the 19th-century novel and 20th-century literature and film. Her most recent books, “Beautiful Bottom, Beautiful Shame: Where ‘Black’ Meets ‘Queer’” and “The Queer Child, or Growing Sideways in the Twentieth Century,” were finalists for the Lambda Literary Award in LGBT Studies. Stockton has taught at Cornell University’s School of Criticism and Theory and, in 2013, she was awarded the Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence, the highest honor granted by the University of Utah.

She earned her doctorate and a master’s degree from Brown University. She earned a Master of Divinity from the Yale University Divinity School, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut.

This lecture is free and open to the public. A Q&A session will follow the lecture. There are 1.5 CEUs available. For more information, or to register for the CEUs, contact Amanda Heiber at 301-991-9679 or anh8@hood.edu.
