Departmental Awards

The Aldan T. Weinberg '75 Communication Arts Prize Established in 2007 by Aldan T. Weinberg '75, professor emeritus of journalism at Hood College. The prize shall be awarded to one or more students, with first priority given to students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in broadcasting, especially with regard to college broadcast organizations, or, second, to students who have demonstrated excellence in communication arts at Hood.

The Alyce Weinberg Honor Scholarship is awarded to a senior majoring in English or communication arts who has done "meritorious work" in English, particularly in communications.

The Andy Rooney Scholarship in Writing Established in 2013 by Beryl Pfizer ’49 in memory of her longtime friend, Andy Rooney, the iconic radio and television writer best known for his weekly segment on the television program 60 Minutes. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student(s) who demonstrates outstanding potential in writing, and is based upon financial need.

The Beryl Pfizer ’49 Scholarship Fund for Theatre Minors Established in 2006 by Beryl Pfizer ’49, the scholarship is awarded annually to a junior declaring a minor in theatre arts and is based on financial need; the award is renewable for the senior year, based on academic standing. The award is made in consultation with the director of Hood’s Theatre Program and the English department faculty.

The Blue and Grey Editorial Award is presented for the best editorial writing in Blue and Grey Today.

The Dean Mary Frear Keeler Scholarship Established in 1992 and funded in 2001 through a bequest by Dr. Mary Frear Keeler, dean emerita of the faculty who died in 1999, the scholarship is awarded annually to student(s) based on financial need, with preference given to students with a special interest in English or European history. 

The Eleanor MacMillan Nelson Scholarship is awarded to a student in the English and Communication Arts Department.

The Elizabeth Peters — Barbara Michaels Scholarship is awarded to a student for excellence in writing.

The Emily Myers Davis Prize is awarded to a student for excellence in English classes.

The Esther E. Shaw Award is awarded for the best news story appearing in Blue and Grey Today.

The Janice E. Cole Scholarship Fund is awarded to a student who has done excellent work in English. 

The Janice E. Cole Writing Prize is awarded to a student who submits the most outstanding essay written for a course in the humanities.

The Margaret Condron Sterner Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed three years at Hood College and has made the most distinguished contribution in the field of creative writing of journalism. 

The Margaret P. Ford Honor Scholarship established in honor of Emerita Professor Margaret P. Ford.

The Martha Briney Scholarship is awarded to an upperclassman who excels in English literature courses.

The Mullison Scholarship Fund Established in 1996 by Gail Mullison Osburn ’69, the scholarship is awarded annually to a student(s) concentrating in English, based first on merit and then financial need.

The Myrtle Annis Scott Scholarship is awarded to a student whose work in the English and Communication Arts Department has been outstanding.

The Nora Roberts Foundation Scholarship Established in 2006 by The Nora Roberts Foundation, the scholarship is awarded annually to a student(s) concentrating in English or theater and drama, and shall be based upon merit and financial need.

The Philip and Janis Miller Wertheimer ’29 Scholarship Fund Established in 1991 and funded through a bequest in 2002 from Janis Miller Wertheimer ’29, an emerita member of the Hood College Board of Associates, the scholarship is awarded annually to students based upon financial need and scholastic ability, with preference given to students residing in Frederick County, Maryland, with a special interest in history or English, but not restricted to these disciplines.

The Robert E. and Ruth M. Delaplaine Scholarship is awarded to that student considered most likely to succeed in the profession of journalism.

The Sally Conrad Fauntleroy Scholarship is awarded to a student who excels in speech courses.

The Virginia Geddert Stone Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in English.
