Student Activities & Organizations

Math Tea

Join the Department of Mathematics in Math Tea each week as we play games, solve puzzles, watch movies and have fun.

Least Squares Math Club

This SGA-supported organization is intended for any Hood student who is interested in mathematics — at any level. We meet to hear guest speakers, participate in community service projects, and have fun! We take field trips to the Maryland Science Center, the National Cryptologic Museum, the Smithsonian and other nearby places of interest. Least Squares members have designed and sold math T-shirts and sponsored bake sales and carwashes to earn money to send students to conferences. Math Club members have attended national mathematics conferences in Phoenix, San Diego and Boulder, as well as regional conferences nearby.

Student Chapter of AWM

Hood has a local chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging women and girls in the mathematical sciences. Student AWM chapter members often help with the department's Sonia Kovalevsky Day for local high school girls. Each year we send several Hood students to the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics, where they meet other young women from around the country and hear talks by well-known female mathematicians.

Student Chapter of the Mathematical Association of America

Some members of the math club also choose to join Hood’s student chapter of the MAA. They can subscribe to journals and buy books at greatly reduced rates; dues start at $30. Student speakers who are members of the chapter may apply for travel grants to MathFest, the annual summer meeting of the MAA. For more information, contact faculty adviser Sara Malec in the math department.

Pi Mu Epsilon Honorary Mathematics Society

Students who take at least one year of calculus and who have outstanding grade-point averages in mathematics and in their general coursework may be elected to Pi Mu Epsilon. The Hood chapter of PME sponsors an annual mathematics lecture by a well-known mathematician. PME also awards travel grants to students presenting talks at MathFest.
